The trial involved looking at the long-term effects of calorie restriction in more than 200 healthy, non-obese subjects.

To study the aging diet, half of them were tasked with cutting calories by 25%, according to the British newspaper, "Mirror".

The trial lasted for two years, allowing insight into the long-term effects of calorie restriction across a number of physiological biomarkers.

The Yale researchers decided to start by analyzing the thymus, a gland located above the heart that produces T cells.

This gland was chosen because it tends to age faster than other organs.

Researchers have found that reducing food consumption enhances the function of the thymus gland, which helps with immunity.

Age-related gland dysfunction is a cause of poor immune responses in the elderly.

The researchers also used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to determine if there were functional differences between the thymus glands of those who restricted calories and those who didn't.

They found that the thymus glands of the calorie-restricted participants had less fat and more functional volume after two years of calorie restriction.

Study leader Professor Vishwa Deep Dixit said: 'This investigation focused on how long-term calorie restriction in humans affects the immune response and inflammation.

Commenting on the finding in the aging diet, Dixit said:

"This suggests that the gland was producing more T cells after two years of calorie restriction than at the beginning of the experiment."
